Social Media and Happiness -An Overview

The World Happiness Report 2026 reveals that the digital landscape is secretly making a generation less happy. There is a drop in well-being, mostly in the English-speaking countries, especially amongst girls.  Less happiness occurs because social media is considered a tool for connection, which could be a possible source of stress. Through social capital, social media boosts wellbeing, but it causes social comparison and anxiety through doom scrolling. Quality use of social media is more effective than quantity. Let’s discuss this connection in detail.

  • Two Different Users on the Internet

One group communicates, creates content, reads news, and learns many things. This group is associated with higher life satisfaction. Lower life evaluations are involved with the second group, who use the internet for browsing, gaming, and social media. The first group can maintain happiness consistency. But the second group may accumulate unhappiness after some time.

  • How Social Media Boosts Happiness

Mood and self-expression improve since social media offers tools for showcasing creativity through content creation and other art. For mental health, people can find peer support groups.  For personal growth and positive emotions, it is good to follow accounts that provide inspiring, uplifting, and educational content.

  • Positive Impact of Social Media

Happiness and mental health increase while strengthening the existing ties, friendship is strengthened due to social support. All this is the outcome of active usage of social media. Amongst the youth, social media can be used as a tool for identity development and community building. The youth needs to bear in mind that there is availability of negative content on social platforms. Such content may boost happiness for the time being, but ultimately it is dangerous.

  • Negative Impact of Social Media

People often feel anxious and depressed. There is a feeling of inadequacy due to social comparison. Also, there are symptoms of lower mental health. All this happens due to passive usage of social media. Users shouldn’t seek validation on social networks. In fact, they should seek genuine intrinsic satisfaction. It is good that you have plenty of followers online, but that shouldn’t impact you personally.

  • What Role Does Moderation Play

Well-being is generally supported through intentional, active, and balanced use of social media. But well-being decreases through excessive and habit-driven consumption.

  • Precautions For Social Media Use

You should be aware who is viewing your post also it is possible to restrict them while setting your profile to private. It is good to think before you post, as things can go viral in seconds. Posting information that reveals your location may compromise your privacy. It is always good not to post photos and information about others without permission.

Individuals engaged in harassment or threats should be blocked and reported. There is no need to indulge in unfavorable comparisons since reel life is far away from reality. If you limit social media usage, you are avoiding anxiety. Accepting a friend request from an unknown individual can prove harmful. You may see links or messages that may ask for money or personal information; reject them even if they come from a friend.

Social media is currently touching new heights. It is like a global platform where people are connected with each other. People can now make phone calls to foreign countries, free of cost. In the past, it used to cost a lot. If social media isn’t making us happy, it is useless.
