At times, it seems like a dream to get a good night's sleep regularly. This happens due to the pace of modern life, which hinders your rest patterns. To be honest, good sleep is the basic element of good health. In fact, sleep is as important as exercise and diet. Getting enough sleep every night enhances your brain performance, and it is overall good for your health. Many diseases and body disorders are the outcome of an unhealthy sleep. Which may further lead to heart disease, obesity, and stroke? Those who work during the night hours mostly suffer from sleep disorders.

Why is Adequate Sleep Needed?

People often believe that sleep is just downtime. It is the time when a tired brain gets rest, but this is a wrong notion. Experts believe that the brain is at work while sleeping. Traits like learning, creating, and remembering happen during sleep. Brain cells remove toxins during sleep. During sleep, its repair time for the body's vessels and the immune system. Most repair processes of the body get disturbed if you don't get adequate sleep.

Myths and Truths that Explain Adequate Sleep

Sleep patterns may vary for all age groups. Your sleep requirements may change with age. Children are advised to sleep nine hours, teens may sleep eight hours, and for adults, it is advised to sleep at least seven hours every night. Sleep quality may worsen with age since adults may take some medications. But the myth that you require less sleep as you grow older is absolutely wrong.

The catch-up myth says that you can recover from your previous night's inadequate sleep in the coming night. But if you are unable to sleep properly for many nights, you might suffer from sleep disorders.

Excess sleep is also an issue. As recommended by the experts, sleeping more than nine hours every night may lead to medical issues.

What are Sleep Disorders?

You try very hard, but something stops you from getting adequate sleep. This implies that you have a specific condition that stops you from getting proper sleep. The most common sleep disorder insomnia occurs when you feel asleep or you have repeated difficulty taking proper sleep. You may feel tired or restless during the daytime if you haven't slept properly the previous night. Experts believe that insomnia may last for more than three months.

In another sleep disorder, apnea, the upper airways get blocked during sleeping hours. As the airflow is stopped, people wake up time and again. If not treated properly, this condition may turn dangerous, leading to various issues related to health.

Ways to Get Better Sleep

There could be many tips and tricks for better sleep. You are not meant to toss around unnecessarily every night, always in search of better sleep.

Sleep issues may occur due to family responsibilities, illness, and work stress. Controlling these factors might not be possible, but you can adopt certain habits that encourage better sleep.

·       There is a need for a particular sleep schedule-Your sleeping hours shouldn't be less than eight hours. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day enhances your body's sleep-wake cycle. It is mandatory that you fall asleep immediately after twenty minutes of going to bed. If this is not happening immediately, leave your bedroom and perform a relaxing activity. Sleep schedule and wake-up time need to be managed regularly.

·       Eating and Drinking Habits Need Attention-Sleeping hungry isn't recommended. Avoiding heavy meals a couple of hours before bedtime are helpful. Be cautious if you are in the habit of taking nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol. Nicotine and caffeine may interfere with your sleep. Similarly, alcohol gives soothing effects in the beginning, but it disturbs sleep in the latter half of the night.

·       Daytime Naps Should Be Avoided- Sometimes, short naps may be helpful, but long and irregular naps will definitely affect night-time sleep. The internal system is affected by daytime sleep. Intact short naps are helpful for sports persons and those who engage themselves with physical activity; their body does not allow any compromise with night sleep.

·       Mattress, Bed, and Pillow should be Comfortable- If the bedding isn't comfortable, lower back pain issues are often noticed. It also creates difficulty while sleeping. Though the thickness of the mattress may vary from person to person, its quality must be awesome. Similarly, it depends on what thickness of pillow suits you, but it should be manufactured from a good material.

·       A Regular Exercise Routine is Helpful- Sleep and health is enhanced with regular exercise.  This may also help in reducing the symptoms of insomnia. But exercising too late in the day may create sleep issues. There are certain limits for weekly exercise routines. You need to consult your fitness coach, who is efficient in deciding the number of minutes your body requires for exercise every week. There should be a gap between bedtime and your workout; hence, there would be a positive effect on your sleep quality.

·       Melatonin Supplements can be used- This supplement is available in pill form, a hormone naturally released in the brain many hours before there is a sense of sleepiness. Melatonin release is stopped because you are exposed to unnatural light from laptops, phones, and TVs.   

·       Going Dark is Essential- All lights should be switched off during the night. In many houses, a less-watt bulb is always on while the baby is sleeping. This is wrong; this bulb may disturb sleep. Also, there should be the use of a flashlight if you are in the habit of waking up during the night for the toilet. Once you wake up, there will be laps of time before going into sleep  again as your eyes are exposed to light.

·       Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, or any other such substance- These substances are harmful to overall health.  They disturb sleep the most. In the beginning, it appears that your sleep improves but ultimately, they shatter sleep and overall health.

As already explained, adequate sleep plays a key role in your overall health. Maintaining good health is impossible without adequate sleep. Making sleep a top priority is important for maintaining optimal health and well-being.
