How India’s Cheap Weight Loss Drugs Encounters The Global Obesity Fight

The earlier weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are likely to expire in the country. This is beneficial for the domestic pharmaceutical companies as they will get the chance to release cheaper copies or generics. Due to perfect competition, the drugs may be much cheaper; hence people all over India, and maybe other countries, may get easy access to these medicines.

As India has decided to unveil the low-cost generic versions of injections like Ozempic, this will definitely transform the global fight against obesity. Earlier treatment through these drugs was considered a luxury, mostly in middle-income countries. But the new drug will dramatically widen access to treatments.

  • Boom in Weight Loss Drugs

The worth of the Indian pharmaceutical industry is expected to double by 2030. Generic, a manufacturing muscle, is now targeting fierce competition over semaglutide. This injection may become far more common, which was otherwise largely confined to affluent patients.

These Injections were originally developed to treat diabetes. But now these are considered game changers for weight loss as well. These injections might offer results that no previous treatments could match. GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of medicines that mimic a hormone perfect to regulate appetite and blood sugar. Semaglutide belongs to this class of medicine.

The medicine helps in slowing the emptying of the stomach due to a boost in insulin release. This drug also helps in staying full sooner and longer. This drug is now the most sought-after weight loss treatment in the world, which was originally developed for diabetes.

  • India’s Health Landscape is Shifting

According to the World Health Organization, India is still among the undernourished countries of the world. Obesity rates are sharply increasing due to rising income and urban lifestyles. Here, it is believed that once a person starts earning money, they turn more sedentary. Government sources reveal that 24 percent of women and 23 percent of men are obese in India.

In the developed countries, the more people earn money, the more time they spend improving their health. But it is the reverse in India.

Though there has been a tenfold growth in the sale of weight loss drugs over the last five years. But these drugs may also lead to side effects like gastrointestinal issues and nausea.

  • No Price Barrier

Earlier, patients abandoned the idea of treating obesity because they were worried about the high prices. Now this price barrier no longer exists as the weight loss treatments are much cheaper compared to the past. For commoners, prices could still be high, and it is expected that generics are likely to reduce the treatment cost. Hence, more people will be encouraged to beat obesity.

It is advised by the experts that the quality of the medicine produced in India should be more regulated.

  • Global Impact

India is considered the largest supplier of generic medicines. Due to its ability to turn expensive medicines into mass market products, India is treated as the pharmacy of the world.

Africa’s half of the generic drug demand is fulfilled from India, as this country supplies medicines to more than 200 countries in the world. The current weight loss drug in India has huge export potential. It’s believed that even developed countries like the USA are going to import the medicine from India.
