5 Early Stage Treatments For Lung Cancer

Lung cancer may not show any signs until it has already reached an advanced stage. If it is treated early, it can prove quite determinant as the spread is stopped immediately and the patient may feel some confidence in his daily life as the symptoms are losing grip.

Small sacs within the lungs help in oxygen exchange. As the body is capable of exchanging oxygen normally, cancer may develop in the small spots in the lungs, which may remain unnoticeable. When patients develop metastasis or pneumonia, leading to a higher rate of mortality, these are evident symptoms.

Also, the patient may notice tell-tale signs like bloody phlegm, coughs, fatigue, chest pain or tightness, weight loss, tiredness, lung infection, and so forth.

Lung cancer can be easily diagnosed through a low-dose CT scan. A biopsy can be collected for further differential diagnosis if a suspicious mass is observed.

Thoracotomy

It is an open chest surgery that begins either from the midline or the side of the body. A multi-muscle incision may be involved, where a rib cage retractor might be inserted to access the lungs. This method is perfect for patients who require the whole lobe removal, patients with lung masses more than 8 centimeters, or patients in need of complicated surgery to connect the vasculature. Incision is about 15 to 20 centimeters in length, leading to a longer recovery time.

Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery

This suits stage 1 and stage 2 patients with a small mass that does not crowd nearby organs. To remove the tumor mass, small incisions are made between the rib cages to insert surgical tools and a scope. Recovery time is quicker and less painful as the scar is only 4 to 5 centimeters long.

Uniportal VATS Surgery

To insert the surgical tools, only one incision is required on the side of the body. This method is perfect for performing lobectomy, wedge resection, or pneumonectomy. The scar length is 3.5 centimeters, which is less painful, and the recovery time is minimal.

Chemotherapy

In this method the cancer cells are stopped from dividing hence mass decreases and it is stopped from dividing. This therapy helps stage 3 and stage 4 patients, where lung cancer might have spread to nearby organs. As per medical assessment, surgery may also be required.

Immunotherapy

To get rid of the cancer cells, immunotherapy medication is used, which leads to a trigger in the body’s immune response. This therapy is for stage 3 and stage 4 cancers.

It is good if lung cancer is discovered at an early stage. Chances of cure and survival are higher  as compared to the patients with an advanced-stage diagnosis. Good health and no preexisting condition or unexplained weight loss are good for better recovery. Patients with other health problems may not have a better outcome in terms of recovery and cure. It is obvious that chances of cure are increased along with a hygienic daily life if the hospital is equipped with the latest technology, where the treatment is done by a medical oncologist. Patients may also recover faster if they abandon cigarettes and other forms of tobacco intake at the time of lung surgery.
